Local Happenings and Incognito

Well, it's been a while since I've updated. Let's see what I missed...

An early morning fire on August 19th damaged the 500 block on Westcott St. Both Mom's Diner and Metro Lounge will be closed for several weeks.

I was over there today and they were still emptying debris out of Pop's Shop, where the fire originated.

The Funky Flea, this time held on the Northside, was held on Prospect Ave off Salina Street on Saturday, August 27th. Music, collectibles, T-Shirts, artwork, as well as live music and some vendors filled out the funky outdoor space.

I had Gentile's pulled pork sandwich with strawberry BBQ sauce. This was actually quite tasty and strawberries surprisingly went very well with the pork. Though, it was a sweltering day out so maybe it wasn't the smartest choice to devour.

Oysters and Kilts was held at Kitty Hoynes on August 9th and I missed it. Sigh. Maybe next year.

Big Slim's Grill has taken over the former Fresco Tortillas Grill and former Movino's Pizza in Armory Square. "Slim" offerings include the Basil Bomber (grilled chicken with cheese, peppers, and pesto) and The Herbivore (a veggie burger) and unhealthy and big offerings include the Balboa (a burger with marinara sauce), the 76er (a classic Philly cheese steak), and customized garbage plates, called "Dumpster Plates".

A late night garbage plate option in Armory Square should be interesting. Anyone remember Movino's? When they first opened, their wood fired pizza margherita was the best.

Also opening up in Downtown recently is OMG CLARK'S! the Saltine Warrior Sports Pub. It's located in the former CL Evers grocery and deli spot in the Amos Building and features micro and macro brew, pizza, wings, burgers, sandwiches, as well as a couple "draft tables" where patrons place their beer order with the bartender and have it dispensed at their table. More info here.
